Three Important Considerations You Need To Make, When Setting Up An Agriculture Related Enterprise
It is often said that the people who succeed in business are those who first think through issues deeply, before venturing into their respective lines of business. Based on that understanding, it would be advisable for you as a person considering setting up an agriculture related enterprise, to make some important considerations prior to the actual initiation of the enterprises. These are considerations that would show you whether you stand a chance for success in the enterprises, and if so, how big those chances are. The said considerations include:
1. The (objective) market consideration: this is mainly about careful and objective demand analysis. Before going into production of any agricultural products, it is important to establish, beforehand, who will buy those products. Don’t venture into agribusiness without knowing where you potential market is. Many have done so, and ended up suffering huge losses where the products they produced lacked buyers. Take note that most of the local stores you see selling agricultural products have contracts with their suppliers, meaning that even if you approach them with the best prices, they may still be hesitant to buy from you, lest they break their contractual obligations to their existent suppliers. Ideally, you should first get supply contracts, before getting into the production of farm products. That is especially the case with easily perishable agricultural products. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense at all to go into production of agricultural products unless you know who will buy them. Marketing of agricultural products doesn’t always turn out to be as easy as it looks.
2. The competition consideration: chances are that the agricultural niche you will be getting into will already have other players who got into it before you. These are likely to be better established players. Chances are also that the niche will attract other, potentially more aggressive, players in the future. You need a certain degree of certainty, beforehand, that you will be reasonably secure in either case. You need to be in a position to compete effectively, even if the competition degenerates into a price war (as it often does). Sometimes, realistic analysis of the competition may reveal it to be unwise for you to venture into a certain niche. Don’t be foolhardy and go into the field in spite of abundant evidence to the effect that you can’t cope. As an entrepreneur, it is important for you to be confident. But it doesn’t make sense for you to be foolhardy. You need to draw the line between healthy entrepreneurial tenacity and sheer foolhardiness.
3. The ‘know-how’ consideration: you will definitely need to know something about the agricultural niche you are considering going into, if you are to attain any degree of success there. It is only with some basic knowledge, at the very least, that you can identify problems and devise products to meet them. It is only with some basic knowledge, at the very least, that you will be able to know what the cost areas in the niche are, and what cost minimization measures you can put in place to ensure that your enterprise is successful. Of course, this is not to say that you need an agricultural degree to venture create any agriculture related business venture. Rather, it is to say that you need some basic knowledge of the specific area you are considering going into, so that at the very least, you can know your way around the industry. Going into a business you have absolutely no knowledge of, however lucrative, is the easiest way to lose your money and time.
